Kgalagadi Lions at sleep. From our recent Kgalagadi trip February/March 2019. Kgalagadi Lions – The day the kudus were lucky!
To point out, they were goofing off at the waterhole. Kudus and Oryx wait in the background to get to the water. Undeniably, the lions have been feeding a few hours ago.
Some time ago, an observation was made, that there is a significant gender skew in the population of lions in the area with many more males than females. This could have long-term effects on the survival of lions in the area. As lions are the apex predator in the Kgalagadi ecosystem their extinction would have a direct effect on prey and smaller predator numbers and, in turn, have negative effects on the ecosystem as a whole.
Check for THAT fly!
