After a noisy night, with the sky full of rain clouds we decide to leave Gurue and drive to Nampula. In the village we can’t photograph because of the 1 May Parade, so we are soon on the road that leads from Guru to Alto Molucoe through an absolutely breathtaking scenery.
First, we stop at a renovated church, unfortunately, there’s worship ( today is also Sunday) and must comply with a photo from the outside. On a pretty good track, we drive along on hundreds of properties whose residents either are walking on the road, or sitting in front of their houses and start to smile at the sight of us and wave, the children run after us and shriek.
Now follows a 3 hours waving parade and children, children, children. The people who live in this area were settled here after the civil war, it looks pretty, well-built houses, happy people. No children are begging. A great tour.
In Alto Molucoe we reach the EN 1. We discover another nice church in Marrupula. Unfortunately we also can not enter here, the church is closed, nobody to see. Moreover, it is getting late. In Nampula (Mozambiques third largest city) we drive to the 16 km outside situated farm Montes Nairucu. There is a dam, a restaurant and many day visitors. In addition, you can camp for 100 Meticais per person (+ – R 25). We are the only campers and they open the extra clean ablutions, provided specially for campers..
The restaurant is well frequented by locals. We decide to eat there. The food is good and cheap, the quality of the service is amazing. We got 30 quail eggs for Amüse Gueule (free), steak and roast beef are good and plentiful. An ice cream for dessert rounds out the whole thing. The owner personally takes care of us, although he expected the next day to be just as much business. (If a public holiday in South Africa is on a Sunday, the following Monday is also a holiday). The Caipirinha is 60 Meticais, much like a local beer. We drink each one and a half of the huge drinks, then we fall into bed, dead tired. The birds are chirping in the nearby reeds for a long time.
